MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Portland on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a West Coast Conference series.

The loss evens the series at 1-1 and drops the Waves to 19-18 overall, 9-8 WCC. Portland moves to 15-23, 2-12 WCC.

Pepperdine fell behind early in the home contest, giving up runs in the first and third inning to go down 2-0. Cooper Hummel hit a two-out RBI double to score the first run of the game and then Ryan Barr singled in a run in the third.

The Waves would answer in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs to even the contest. Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) doubled home a run and then a fielder's choice groundout scored the second run for Pepperdine. That was all the offense the Waves could manage on the day, however.

Davis Tominaga tossed 6.1 innings for the Pilots, giving up three hits and two runs. Jordan Lockwood threw the final 2.2 innings to pick up the save.

It was a Pepperdine miscue that allowed the go-ahead run to score in the seventh, when a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt brought home a runner all the way from first base. After giving up the unearned run, Waves reliever Max Gamboa (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais HS) got the final two outs of the inning with a runner on third to keep the game close.

Gamboa threw 4.0 innings, giving up four hits and just the one unearned run, while striking out two batters. Max Green (Rolling Hills Estate, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) and Evan Dunn (Las Vegas, Nev./Bishop Gorman HS) came in to throw the final two innings.

Chase Lambert (Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS) led the Waves at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Barr had a three-hit day for Portland.

The teams will wrap up their series tomorrow at 1 p.m. in Malibu. That game can be seen live on WaveCasts via TheW.tv.
