LAST WEEK: Last week, the Waves faced tough competition on the road, first with 61st-ranked BYU and then with 31st-ranked San Diego, eventually falling in both contests. In the 4-2 loss at BYU, Pepperdine first went down in doubles play to head into singles competition with a disadvantage. The Cougars built a 2-0 lead early with a win on court three, but the Waves were quick to rally back on court one as Guilherme Hadlich downed Shane Monroe with a 7-5, 6-4 final score to close the gap to one. BYU then took the set on court four to go up yet again, before the Waves number two single, Lautaro Pane, defeated Keaton Cullimore with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) final result to once again bring the Waves close to a tie. The Cougars were up to the challenge, however, and ended up putting the match away with a three-set win on court five.

Then, in the 4-0 loss at San Diego, the Waves put up a valiant effort, but the Toreros were able to put the doubles point and three singles matches in the books before the Waves could gain footing. Courts three and four were playing in the third set before the match was clinched and Pane on court two was battling his opposition as well.

THE NO. 61 WAVES: The Waves are currently ranked 61st in the Oracle/ITA Rankings and have one team, Guilherme Hadlich and Gabriel Sidney ranked in the doubles rankings at 51st. Pepperdine has an even 10-10 overall record with a 4-3 conference output at this point in the season.

In singles dual play, the Waves have a .532 win-loss percentage with 50 wins and 44 losses on the season thus far. Lautaro Pane leads the effort with an impressive 14-1 overall record, with an 8-1 record in the number two singles position and undefeated 4-0 and 2-0 records while playing in the number three and four positions respectively. He is currently on a six-match winning streak. Pedro Iamachkine is next for the Waves with a 10-5 record, including a 7-1 record from the number five singles position. Hadlich and Jack Van Slyke have each also tabbed seven wins in the dual campaign towards the Waves' effort.

In the doubles dual campaign, the Waves have a 20-24 overall record for a .455 win-loss percentage against opposition this season. Iamachkine and Pane lead the team with nine wins on the season, including a 7-1 record from the number two doubles position and two wins in the number one slot. Tom Hill has three wins when playing with both Stefan Menichella (3-5) and Van Slyke (3-3).

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION: Pepperdine holds a perfect 18-0 record against Santa Clara all-time, including the last two matches in 2014 and 2015 when the Waves trumped the Broncos with 4-0 sweeps. This season Santa Clara has a 10-10 overall record and 3-3 record when playing West Coast Conference opponents. The Broncos are coming off 4-3 win at San Francisco last week.

The Waves hold an untarnished 20-0 record against San Francisco all-time, including last season when Pepperdine downed the Dons on the road 4-2 and in a neutral setting 4-1. USF is currently 4-18 on the season overall and holds a 1-6 record against WCC opponents. Last week, the team lost the fifth and sixth straight matches, first dropping 4-0 at Stanford before falling 4-3 at Santa Clara.

WCC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: The Waves sophomore duo Lautaro Pane and Pedro Iamachkine have garnered three separate WCC Doubles Team of the Week honors this season. The team has gone 9-6 in dual play, including two wins in the number one position and a 7-1 record in the number two doubles position. Junior Guilherme Hadlich has also picked up one singles player of the week honor this season on March 8. He leads the Waves in the number one singles position with a 5-4 record, including two wins against nationally ranked opponents.

RANKINGS: The Waves are currently ranked 61st in the Oracle/ITA Rankings, and have one doubles team ranked on the Oracle/ITA rankings, junior Guilherme Hadlich and freshman Gabriel Sidney who rank 51st. Pepperdine opened the spring campaign ranked No. 33 as a team in the Oracle/ITA Rankings. As a doubles duo, Hadlich and Sidney were ranked 17th for the Waves. The pair garnered the No. 19-spot heading at the start of the 2016 spring campaign. In the fall, the duo went 7-3 overall, including a 2-2 outing against nationally ranked opponents. The fall was highlighted by the two in their first tournament as doubles partners at the Oracle/ITA Masters when the two defeated No. 1 Georgia with a 3-6, 7-5, 11-9 decision and the No. 28 Notre Dame partners with a sizeable 6-4, 7-5 result before competing in the championship match against No. 2 Virginia.

FALL 2015: The Waves played well to start the 2015-16 campaign, competing in seven tournaments in 2015 before heading into the 2016 dual campaign. In doubles play, the Waves posted a .568 win-loss percentage in tourney play after amassing a 25-19 record against opponents. Duo Guilherme Hadlich and Gabriel Sidney tabbed nine wins in the fall for the Waves, first making a splash at the first-ever Oracle/ITA Masters hosted by Malibu Racquet Club. After defeating nationally ranked No. 1 Georgia pair Austin Smith and Ben Wagland in come-back fashion and No. 28 Notre Dame partners Alex Lawson and Quentin Monaghan in straight sets, Hadlich and Sidney competed for the Oracle/ITA Masters Championships. The team fell just short, falling to No. 2 Virginia pair Luca Corinteli and Ryan Shane, to finish as runners-up. The pair also excelled on the court of the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational, reaching the gold doubles championship match-up and earning runners-up status.

Sophomore doubles pair Pedro Iamachkine and Lautaro Pane led the Waves with 12 wins throughout the fall, ending the season with a 12-3 record in tournament play. The pair reached the championship match-up of the Pepperdine-hosted USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship tournament against No. 17 San Diego duo Jordan Angus and Philip Vittek, falling just short in two sets, 6-4, 6-3. Unranked and unseeded Iamachkine and Pane faced a tough draw throughout the tournament, excelling at all odds after defeating Grand Canyon's Alexander Roggenkamp and Felix Shueller (8-3), San Diego State's No. 31 pair Frederik Gelbrich and Hendrik Jebens (8-3), No. 7-seed out of Arizona Trent Botha and Naoki Taked (8-4) and No. 4 seed Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Wiele Sell (6-5 (5), 6-0) out of UCLA to reach the championship match-up. In the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational, Pane gave the Waves the highlight of the weekend after taking home the garnet singles title, as well as the garnet doubles title alongside Iamachkine.

During singles competition in the fall, the Waves posted a .409 win-loss percentage after winning 27 of 66 total singles matches. Hadlich and Pane led the Waves with six wins apiece against opponents. Sidney and Iamachkine were second on the team with five kills apiece throughout the fall.

FERREIRA: Marcelo Ferreira enters his second season as head coach of the Pepperdine men's tennis team in 2015-16. After serving as the Waves' associate head coach in 2013-14, he was elevated to head coach in July 2014. Ferreira is now the 14th head coach in the program's storied history, dating back to the 1940s.

#PURPOSE: The Pepperdine University Department of Athletics is committed to Christian values, to the academic well-being of all of our student-athletes and to competing for championships. We prepare students for success by challenging them to think differently - find your purpose, serve others and lead by example. The Competing with Purpose campaign highlights the commitment to our core values that student-athletes, coaches and staff dedicate themselves to daily. Competing with Purpose provides the foundation on which champions are built.

WAVES IN THE PROS: Pepperdine has sent its fair share of student-athletes into the pro circuit. Alex Sarkissian won the Silex Men's $15,000 Futures tournament in Vancouver in the summer of 2014. He went on to reach the semifinals of the US Open's inaugural American Collegiate Invitational. Robert Lindstedt, 1998 All-American and NCAA Doubles Championship finalist, has reached as high as #3 in the world doubles rankings. He won the doubles draw at the 2014 Australian Open and is a three-time Wimbledon finalist. Andre Begemann, member of the 2006 NCAA Championship-winning squad, can also be found playing on the pro tour, as can 2012 graduate Alex Llompart.

ABOUT PEPPERDINE: Pepperdine boasts a one-of-a-kind athletic department with unprecedented success for a school of its size. The Waves have won NCAA Division I Championships in five different men's sports — one of just 17 schools to have accomplished this feat — and nine overall. Of this elite group, Pepperdine has the smallest undergraduate enrollment, is the only school without football and is the only university that has not been affiliated with a "major" conference. The Waves have won a total of 25 team or individual national championships in their history. Pepperdine has also earned the Division I-AAA All-Sports Trophy, an award based on postseason success that's given to the top non-football school, three times (most recently in 2011-12). Located in scenic Malibu, Calif., the university overlooks the Pacific Ocean and its campus and athletic facilities are regularly voted among the nation's most beautiful. Pepperdine, which is affiliated with the Church of Christ, ranks No. 52 overall on U.S. News and World Report's list of America's best colleges.
