LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team suffered a 7-0 loss on the road to Loyola Marymount on Saturday, just a night after shutting the Lions out 6-0 in the opener.

The Pepperdine offense was never able to get going, as the Waves fell to 17-16 overall and 7-7 in West Coast Conference play. The Lions move to 17-8 overall, 8-6 WCC.

LMU went up 1-0 in the second inning after an RBI single by Jimmy Hill. Jamey Smart then made it a 2-0 game with a solo-shot in the fourth inning. After a leadoff triple chase Pepperdine starter Max Gamboa (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais HS) in the fifth, Ryan Erickson doubled home the third run of the game and was later brought home by Smart to make it 4-0.

The Lions added another run in the sixth when Phil Caulfield hit an RBI single. LMU would tack on two more runs courtesy of a pair of squeeze bunts in the eighth.

Cory Abbott tossed 8.0 scoreless innings for the Lions, giving up four hits and just two walks, while striking out six. He moves to 4-3 on the year. Gamboa falls to 1-5 with the loss.

Of the Waves four hits, two were leadoff singles that Pepperdine wasn't able to do anything with. Just one runner made it into scoring position, when Matt Crowder (Atherton, Calif.//BYU) had a pinch-hit single in the eighth, but was stranded on second after a groundout moved him over.

Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Rey, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) led the Waves with two hits on the day. Smart was 3-for-4 for LMU, with two RBI and two runs scored.

The Waves and Lions will wrap their series up tomorrow at 1 p.m. That game can be heard live on WaveCasts.
