LA JOLLA, Calif. - Coming off a strong 6-1 win San Diego State yesterday, the Pepperdine men's tennis squad opened the first rounds of the Pacific Doubles Championships at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club in La Jolla, Calif. this Friday.
First, sophomore duo Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) sophomore Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) won through the first three rounds to advance to the round of 16 to be played tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against either Paul Goldstein and Roy Lederman, the No. 14 seed of the tournament, or the No. 1 seed from Rice University Bojan Szumanski and Krzysztof Kwinta.
The duo put up a strong effort today, beginning the round of 128 against the No. 6-seeded Grant Doyle and Ryan Seggerman and defeating the opposition 8-6. Then in the next round, the pair dropped UC Davis' James Wade and Eli Whittle with an 8-3 final mark to advance to the round of 32. The duo worked tough against UCLA's Logan Staggs and Ryoto Tachi, eventually winning the match-up with a dominating 8-2 win to close out the day.
hen, junior Guilherme Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia) and freshman Gabriel Sidney (Curitiba, Parana, Brazil/Anglo Americano), the No. 2 seed of the tournament and nationally ranked No. 30 pair, defeated Bryant University's Corey DiPaola and Richard Sipala, 8-4, before continuing the day with an 8-2 victory over Thomas Dodson and Jimmy Purdy of Villanova. Then, in the round of 32 and final match of day one, the duo faced off with Oklahoma State's No. 16 seed, Lucas Gerch and Temur Ismailov, eventually falling 8-2 to bow out of the tournament.
Juniors Tom Hill (Birgmingham, England/K12 International Academy) and Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./Fusion Academy) started the day successfully, dropping UC Irvine's Sebastian Helm and Nico Mertens with a close 8-6 final mark. The pair then faced Baylor's No. 8-seeded Jimmy Bendeck and Julian Lenz, falling 8-4 to end the day.
Sophomore Nicholas Baez (Somis, Calif./Laurel Springs School) and freshman Guilherme Galvao (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Avanço) also found tremendous success in the consolation bracket of the tournament. After falling in the round of 128, 8-0, to unattached pair Kimo Barrere and Corentin Haener.
Then, in the consolation bracket, the duo went undefeated, first dropping unattached Yaseen Kady and Cameron Mofid with a commanding 8-1 final score. After a bye in the next round, the team put down Boston College's AJ Aziz and Max MacKinnon to advance to the fourth round to be played at 9 a.m. tomorrow morning against USC's pair Logan Smith and David Laser.
