SPOKANE, Wash. - The Pepperdine baseball team was unable to rebound from an early 5-0 deficit on the road against Gonzaga, falling to the Bulldogs 11-4 on Sunday afternoon. The win gave Gonzaga a 2-1 series victory in what was both teams' first West Coast Conference series of the season.

Pepperdine falls to 9-10 overall, 1-2 WCC with the loss, while the Bulldogs move to 11-7 overall, 2-1 WCC.

Gonzaga scored twice in the bottom of the first inning, getting RBI singles from Dustin Breshears and Patrick Chung. The Zags would add three more runs on a Jeffrey Bohling home run in the fifth inning before the Waves could get on the board.

Pepperdine scored in the top of the sixth courtesy of an Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) single and then Chris Fornaci (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle HS) made it a 5-3 game with a two-run blast in the top of the seventh.

That was as close as the Waves would come, however, as Gonzaga scored four runs in the home half of the seventh and then tacked on two more in the eighth. Ben Rodriguez (Scottsdale, Ariz./Desert Mountain HS) would hit a solo-homer in the ninth for the Waves.

Freshman lefty Easton Lucas (Simi Valley, Calif./Grace Brethren HS) took the loss to move to 2-2 on the year, while Eli Morgan got the win for Gonzaga, moving to 3-1 on the season.

Barnett and Chase Lambert (Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS) each had two-hit days for Pepperdine. The Bulldogs' Bohling led all players with four hits in the game.

Pepperdine will be back in action on Thursday, when they return home to host San Diego in another three-game WCC series. That series will run Thursday-Saturday, with the first two games at 3 p.m. and the finale at 1 p.m. All three contests can be seen on TheW.tv
