MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team kept its winning ways alive on Sunday, beating Columbia for the third straight game with a 3-1 victory.
The win moves Pepperdine to 7-8 on the year and drops Columbia to 2-5. The teams will wrap their four-game series tomorrow with a 3 p.m. game.
The Waves jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the first. Pepperdine would leave the bases full, however, on a popup in foul territory. Columbia came back with a run in the top of the fourth, scoring on a groundout to even the game at 1-1.
Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) gave the lead back to the Waves in the fifth, doubling in a pair of runs with a shot to the gap in left field.
Jonathan Pendergast (San Diego, Calif./Catherdral Catholic HS) gave the Waves a strong start on the mound, tossing 7.0 innings and giving up just five hits and one run. The win moves the freshman to 1-0. Ryan Wilson (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) came in and shut down the visitors in the eight, striking out a pair to keep the Waves ahead by two. He would stay in in the ninth, working a quick 1-3-2 inning to record his first save of the year.
Kevin Roy took the loss for the Lions, going 6.0 innings and giving up eight hits and three runs. He falls to 0-1.
Anderson's two RBI led all players on the day and three Waves had two-hit days. Aaron Barnett (Mission Viejo, Calif./Capistrano Valley HS) and Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) both went 2-for-3 at the plate, and Matthew Kanfer (Playa Del Rey, Calif./L.A.C.E.S.) went 2-for-4 and scored a pair of runs.
The Lions had just five hits in the game.
