MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team blasted four home runs on Sunday afternoon, en route to a 12-5 victory over the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in a non-conference matchup.

The win gives Pepperdine a 2-1 series win over the Grizzlies after the Waves also picked up a victory yesterday. Pepperdine moves to 2-1 on the year, while Oakland falls to 1-2.

"We definitely showed some power today," said Head Coach Rick Hirtensteiner, who is in his first season as the Waves' manager. "We had four home runs and two of them were three-run homers. We also had a couple of doubles as well, so we were swinging the bats pretty well. When you can hit that many home runs and add some doubles to the attack, you're going to have some good success."

Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) led the game off with a solo-shot to right-center for Pepperdine, but the Waves were held scoreless for the next two innings, taking a 1-0 lead into the fourth. That's when Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) broke things open with a three-run shot to left field. It was Jefferson's second home run in as many games.

Pepperdine continued to pour it on in the fifth, scoring four runs to grab a commanding 8-0 lead. The Grizzlies issued three bases-loaded walks in the inning and Jefferson recorded his fourth RBI with a sacrifice fly. Brad Anderson (Yorba Linda, Calif./Esperanza HS) hit his first home run of the year to make it a 9-0 game in the sixth and Chase Lambert (Malibu, Calif./Malibu HS) smashed a three-run shot to left in the eighth to give Pepperdine 12 runs.

Oakland scored three in the seventh and two in the ninth, but it was too little too late as the Pepperdine pitching was in command for most of the day.

Chandler Blanchard (Henderson, Nev./Coronado HS) got the start for the Waves, tossing 6.1 strong innings to move to 1-0. The Pepperdine righty gave up five hits, three earned runs and two walks, while striking out five batters. Three Waves relievers combined to finish the game off.

"We've gotten good starts on the mound the last two games," said Hirtensteiner, who got a strong 7.0 inning from Kiko Garcia (Chula Vista, Calif./St. Augustine HS) in yesterday's win. "I think when you can have your Saturday and Sunday starters have an attack like that, throwing three different pitches for strikes, it gives you a great chance to win on those days."

After a slow offensive start in the Waves' 7-3 opening day loss, Pepperdine pounded Grizzlies' pitching for 18 hits and 20 runs over the last two games.

Jefferson, Anderson and Lambert all had two-hit days on Sunday, and Jefferson's four RBI led all players. Mike Brosseau and Myles Zilinsky each recorded a pair of hits for Oakland.

The Waves will be back in action on Tuesday, when they host CSUN for another non-conference game. First pitch for that contest will be at 2 p.m. at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
