Waves Can't Keep Pace at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. " The Pepperdine women's basketball team fell on the road to Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon, 84-50, in a West Coast Conference matchup.

The Waves were without their leading scorer, Erica Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS), for the second straight game and Marie Berdholt scored 27 points for Santa Clara as the Waves couldn't keep pace on the road. The loss drops Pepperdine to 6-22 overall, 2-15 WCC, while the Broncos move to 21-6, 11-4 WCC.

Santa Clara held a decisive rebounding edge in the game and grabbed 23 offensive boards, leading to 30 second chance points which was a large part of the difference on the day.

The Broncos jumped out to a 28-14 lead after the first quarter. In a low-scoring second period the Waves actually held an 8-7 scoring advantage, but still trailed 35-22 at the break.

Another 28-point quarter in the third kept Santa Clara ahead for good. The Broncos shot 47.2 percent in the second half.

Pepperdine actually outshot Santa Clara for the game, 42-41 percent, but also turned the ball over 27 times. The Broncos made 20 free throws in the game to just nine for the Waves.

Allie Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS) led Pepperdine with 18 points on the day and Devin Stanback (West Hills, Calif./Chaminade HS) added nine. Berdholt finished the day with 27 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists.

The Waves will be back in action next Saturday when they host LMU for their final regular-season contest.
