MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team won its second game in a row on Monday, beating the Roadrunners of CSU Bakersfield 62-57 in overtime. Senior captain Allie Green followed up a 29-point game with 21 points on Monday to lead Pepperdine to the win.
The Waves (2-9) took on the Roadrunners (4-8) in their final non-conference matchup on Monday. After beating Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, the Waves held off CSU Bakersfield, despite the Roadrunners coming back to force overtime with a late push.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Waves extended their lead to six on a three-pointer by Kayla Blair (Fairfield, Calif./Vanden HS), and then went up by a game-high eight points on a Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS) jumper with 6:21 to play. The Roadrunners clawed back to within two with less than five minutes on the clock, going on a 6-0 run. Yasmine Robinson-Bacote (Hillside, N.J./Hillside HS) made two clutch free throws late in the fourth to extend the Waves' lead to four. After two free throws by the Roadrunners, a costly turnover by the Waves allowed CSUB to tie the game at 50-50 with 1:39 left.
With the game tied in the last minute of the game, Robinson-Bacote made a layup with 32.8 seconds left to reclaim the lead for the home team. Jazmyne Bartee answered with a layup of her own for the visitors with 6.2 seconds left to tie the game back up and send it to overtime.
In the overtime period, the Roadrunners got on the board first with a three-point basket, but were quickly answered by a basket from Green, her 20th and 21st points of the day. The Waves then took the lead back with a three-pointer by Paige Fecske (Studio City, Calif./Chaminade HS). A turnover by the Roadrunners put the ball back with the Waves, and a foul gave the Waves two more points from the free throw line by Barbara Sitanggan (Fullerton, Calif./Troy HS), pushing it to a 59-55 lead with 21 seconds to go. Fecske would make three free throws in the final seconds to answer just one basket by CSUB.
Pepperdine held the Roadrunners to just five points in overtime. For the game, the Waves owned a 47-36 rebounding advantage and scored 21 points off of 18 CSUB turnovers.
Megan House (Oceanside, Calif./J Serra Catholic HS) led the rebounding charge for the Waves, grabbing a career-high 13 boards. Green's 21 points led all scorers. Robinson-Bacote finished with 14 points and Fecske had 10. Erika Williams had 20 points for the Roadrunners.
The Waves trailed 28-27 after a back and forth first half, but came out with 6-0 run to start the third quarter and grab the advantage. There were eight lead changes and seven ties in the game. Pepperdine held CSUB to nine points in the third quarter and led 39-37 heading to the fourth.
Pepperdine outshot the Roadrunners 35%-32% and CSUB hit nine threes to the Waves' four. Pepperdine had 12 assists on 22 field goals.
After a short break for the holidays, the Waves begin conference play on the December 29 against Gonzaga at home in Malibu. Pepperdine then hosts Portland for a December 31 contest.
