MALIBU, Calif. — The Pepperdine women's volleyball team returns home this week to continue West Coast Conference play by hosting Saint Mary's on Thursday and Pacific on Saturday.
MATCH #23 — Thursday (October 27) at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif.: Pepperdine (8-14, 2-8 WCC) vs. Saint Mary's (10-11, 5-5 WCC) at 7 p.m. (PT).

BY THE NUMBERS — The Waves currently have an 8-14 overall record and a 2-8 record in the West Coast Conference. The team holds a 2-6 record at home, 2-8 record on the road and a 4-0 record on neutral courts. Pepperdine averages 11.71 kills/set on a .178 hitting percentage, while posting 10.84 assists/set, 1.05 aces/set, 15.51 digs/set and 2.25 blocks/set against opponents.
SOPHOMORE RETURNERS — Sophomore returners play a big part in the Waves' program this season, with Heidi Dyer, Tarah Wylie, Nikki Lyons and Jenna Tunnell all making an impact. Dyer is well-rounded with 1.95 kills/set, 5.14 assists/set, 2.27 digs/set and 0.46 blocks/set for the Waves. Wylie is good for 0.94 blocks/set with 78 total blocks. She leads the team with 24 aces, averaging 0.29 aces/set, and adds 1.88 kills/set each match. Lyons is a heavy hitter on the outside with 2.06 kills/set, and has also posted 14 aces and averages 2.30 digs/set and 0.38 blocks/set. Tunnell came in late in the season to start performing for the Waves and now posts 3.12 assists/set, 0.80 kills/set, 1.59 digs/set and 0.27 blocks/set for the Waves.
FRESHMEN IMPACT — Hannah Frohling, Jasmine Gross and Hana Lishman all make a solid difference on the court for the Waves. Frohling leads the team with 2.11 kills/set after amassing 177 total kills this season. She also posts 1.04 digs/set and 0.39 blocks/set for the team. Gross leads Pepperdine and the conference with 1.20 blocks/set after posting 98 total blocks, including 12 solo rejections. She also adds 1.78 kills/set. Lishman anchors the back row as libero, amassing 3.49 digs/set for the Waves and helping the effort with 0.66 assists/set and 0.13 aces/set this season.
SAINT MARY'S GAELS — The Waves boast a 44-15 overall record over the Gaels, having won 14-straight matches from 1987-93 to start off the record. SMC collected the team's first win in 1994 in a five-setter, before the Waves went on another streak, this time 19 matches from 1994-2003. Earlier this season, the Gaels bested the Waves in four sets on the road. The Gaels have gone 10-11 overall and an even 5-5 in WCC play up to this point in the season. Saint Mary's averages 12.39 kills/set, 11.46 assists/set, 1.26 aces/set, 13.89 digs/set and 2.00 blocks/set this season. On the attack, the team puts out a .199 success rate with 867 total kills.
PACIFIC TIGERS — Pepperdine holds a 14-13 overall record against the Tigers all-time, an advantage taken earlier this season when the Waves swept Pacific, a team ranked third in the standings, on the road. The teams first faced in 1977 when the Waves won the first four-straight matches, before the Tigers won 10-consecutive matches from 1979-94. Pepperdine went on a five-match winning streak from 2003-13 and has currently won three matches in a row in the past two seasons. The Tigers have gone 13-9 overall and 7-3 in the WCC, to earn the No. 3 spot in the conference standings. The team amasses 13.18 kills/set on a .223 attack output, while adding 12.24 assists/set, 1.33 aces/set, 15.38 digs/set and 2.32 blocks/set so far this season.
LAST WEEK: #16 BYU & #5 SAN DIEGO — Last week, the Waves had a tough schedule with No. 16-ranked BYU and No. 5-ranked San Diego, both on the road. The Cougars took down the Waves in three sets, 25-14, 25-12 and 25-20, while San Diego earned the win with 25-14, 25-22, 30-28 and 25-16 set scores.
Against 16th-ranked BYU, the Waves produced a .117 hitting percentage with three blocks and 37 digs. The Cougars posted a .316 attack output with 40 kills, five aces, 35 digs and 12.0 team blocks throughout the match. Ashley Harris led Pepperdine with a .312 hitting percentage and six blocks, while Jasmine Gross tallied three blocks and Heidi Dyer and Jenna Tunnell amassed 15 assists apiece.
Against San Diego, a team ranked 5th in the AVCA Coaches Poll, the Waves posted a .149 success rate on 50 kills, with three aces, 49 digs and 12.5 team blocks. The opposition tabbed a .243 attack percentage on 56 kills, with five aces, 49 digs and 13.0 team blocks. Gross led the Waves with 11 kills on a .222 offensive output, while she, Tarah Wylie and Harris each posted a team-high five blocks. Dyer posted a double-double with 19 assists and 12 digs and Tunnell led Pepperdine with 22 assists.
Scott Wong — Pepperdine alum Scott Wong was named head coach in December 2014, becoming the fifth head coach in program history. In his first outing on the sidelines with the Waves, he led the team to their first 4-0 undefeated start since the 2009 season, as well as an Asics Classic victory. In his first complete year, Wong led the Waves to a 17-14 overall record and 8-10 record among West Coast Conference competitors. He was an assistant with the Waves' men's program from 2005-09 (and was part of the 2005 NCAA championship-winning team) before moving back to his home state of Hawaii and serving as associate coach with the Rainbows' women's squad for five seasons. He was also Hawaii's sand volleyball head coach. Wong was a three-time All-American with the Waves between 1998-01.

The Waves have advanced to postseason play 27 times in 41 seasons, including 13 trips to the NCAA Championships in the last 19 seasons. Pepperdine's best finishes in recent years came when the team made the regional final of the NCAA Tournament in 2002 and again in 2011. Ten players have earned AVCA or Volleyball Magazine All-American honors a combined 19 times, while six players have been dubbed the WCC Player of the Year nine total times. Nina Matthies, who stepped down after the 2013 season, was inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame in December, 2015.
