Men's Tennis Bows Out of the ITA Southwest Regional

TOURNAMENT CENTRAL | PHOTO GALLERYMALIBU, Calif. - After reaching the quarterfinals of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center this Saturday afternoon, Guilherme Hadlich and Pedro Iamachkine of the 53rd-ranked Pepperdine men's tennis team fell to USC opponents to bow out of the tournament.
No. 117-ranked and 6th-seeded Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia) took his first win of the day over 9th-seeded Joseph Di Giulio of UCLA with a commanding 6-1, 6-3 result. He then faced No. 48-ranked USC competitor Logan Smith, the 3rd seed in the tournament, going point-for-point with the Trojan en route to a 7-6 (6) first set loss. Smith then came out strong in the second, working to a 6-4 final set win to advance to the semifinals.
Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS), the 14th-seed, also had solid competition. First, he dominated UCSB's 8th-seeded Nicolas Moreno de Alboran with 6-1 and 6-3 sets before facing USC's No. 85-ranked and 4th-seeded Thibault Forget. The junior Wave fell 6-3, 6-1 to bow out of the regional.
Freshman Dane Esses (Houston, Texas/Memorial HS) and junior Nicholas Baez (Somis, Calif./Laurel Springs School) each competed in the singles back draw in the early afternoon as well.
Esses broke out of the starting gate with a 6-3 win over Cal Poly's #1 singles player and No. 121-ranked Benjamin Donovan. The Mustang then took the following sets 6-1, 10-6 to secure the victory and move on.
Baez also battled tough, dropping the first set 7-6 (4) to Cal Poly's Daniel Cardiff before falling 6-2 to bow out of the tournament.
