STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team led late, but couldn't close out a win on the road over Pacific, falling 65-62 to the Tigers.
Pepperdine had a chance at a game-tying shot, but couldn't get the attempt off before the buzzer. The Waves fall to 5-10 overall with the loss and 1-3 in West Coast Conference play, while the Tigers move to 9-7, 2-3 WCC.
Pacific jumped out to an early lead, but the Waves went on an 8-0 run to take a 10-7 lead midway through the opening quarter. Pepperdine finished the first quarter up 17-13 thanks to 10 early points from Erica Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS).
A pair of quick baskets for Pacific tied things up early in the second quarter, as the teams would trade baskets for most of the period. A 3-pointer from Erin Butler at the 3:19 mark gave the Tigers a 28-25 lead, but Devin Stanback (West Hills, Calif./Chaminade HS) would score a three-point play down low for Pepperdine to even the game at 30-30 going into the break.
Both teams shot just over 40 percent in the opening half. Pepperdine was 0-for-8 from 3-point territory in the first two quarters, while the Tigers went 2-for-14 from long range. The Waves made up for it by hitting 6-of-7 free throws and did not send Pacific to the line.
Olivia Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS) would knock down two quick buckets coming out of the half to put the Waves back up by four and in a low scoring third quarter, Pepperdine took a 42-38 lead into the final period. The teams traded baskets early in the fourth quarter until Pacific went on a 10-0 run to take a 55-46 lead with 5:38 to play.
After trailing by as much as 10, the Waves cut it to a two-point game on a layup by Paige Fecske (Studio City, Calif./Chaminade HS) with 2:05 to play. Fecske's layup completed a 10-2 run for Pepperdine and made it 60-58. That was as close as the Waves would get, though, as Pacific hit 7-of-8 free throws down the stretch. The one miss came with six seconds left, setting up a final opportunity for the visitors, but Pepperdine couldn't get a final shot off.
Erica Ogwumike led all scorers with 20 points in the game and Desire Finnie led Pacific with 15 points. Finnie also had a game-high nine rebounds. Four tigers scored in double figures, while Ogwumike was the lone Wave.
Pepperdine shot 42.4 percent for the game, while holding the Tigers to 32.8 percent shooting. Pacific made 15-of-16 free throws in the second half and hit four fourth-quarter threes, though.
