MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team faced first-place San Diego for the second straight week, but couldn't come away with the win at home on Thursday night, falling 70-54.

Erica Ogwumike posted a double-double for the Waves, scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Hood sisters' big nights. Malina Hood put up a double-double of her own for San Diego with 18 points and 10 rebounds and Maya Hood led all scorers with 23 points.

Pepperdine falls to 5-16 overall and 1-9 in West Coast Conference play, while the Toreros move to 19-2, 9-1 WCC.

The Waves got off to a good start, taking a 9-6 lead with 5:15 left in the first quarter on an Allie Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS) three. That was the last point of the period for the home team, however, as San Diego finished the first quarter on a 16-0 run to take a 22-9 lead. The Toreros pushed their advantage to as much as 19 before the half, taking a 36-17 lead into the break.

Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS) was 5-of-8 from the field, leading the way for the Waves in the first half with 10 points. Malina Hood led the visitors with 16 points courtesy of 6-of-9 shooting and 4-of-4 threes.

The Waves would outscore San Diego 18-14 in the third quarter and then cut it to an 11-point deficit early in the fourth, but that was as close as Pepperdine would come. The Toreros pushed it back to a 17-point game midway through the fourth quarter.

The Waves held San Diego to 42.9 percent shooting and just the four first-half threes made by Malina Hood, but the Waves were 1-for-7 from beyond the arc and shot 38.9 percent from the floor in the contest. Green also chipped in 11 pts and Ogwumike filled out her stat line with three assists, three steals and two blocks.

The Waves will be back in action on Saturday when BYU comes to Malibu for a 1 p.m. matchup. That game can be seen live on TheW.tv.
