Pepperdine Falls at First-Place San Diego, 74-55

SAN DIEGO, Calif. " The Pepperdine women's basketball team fell on the road to first-place San Diego, 74-55, on Thursday night in a West Coast Conference matchup.

The Waves cut the deficit to single digits for much of the third quarter, but a late run in the fourth pulled San Diego away. Pepperdine falls to 5-14 overall, 1-7 WCC, while the Toreros hold on to a tie for first place with a 17-2, 7-1 WCC record.

After a very slow first quarter, the Waves came charging back in the second, outscoring USD 17-15 in the period and cutting the deficit to four points several times.

The Waves kept it a single-digit deficit for most of the third quarter in thanks to nine points in the period from Erica Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS). The Toreros got a turnover and 3-pointer in the final seconds of the quarter though, taking a 52-40 lead into the fourth.

The Waves couldn't cut the deficit below 10 down the stretch and an 11-0 run late in the quarter helped the home team pull away.

USD got 25 points from Malina Hood, who 10-of-16 from the floor and hit 5-of-8 threes. Maya Hood scored 16 points as the Toreros shot a blistering 53.6 percent for the game.

After shooting just 16.7 percent in the first quarter, the Waves shot better than 50 percent in both the second and fourth quarters. Pepperdine was led by Ogwumike's 17 points and got 12 points and seven rebounds from Devin Stanback (West Hills, Calif./Chaminade HS). Ogwumike also had seven rebounds.

The Waves dominated the offensive glass early to stay close and finished with a 15-9 offensive rebounding edge.

Pepperdine will be back in action on Saturday, as the Waves have a 1 p.m. (PT) road contest against BYU. That game can be heard live on WaveCasts and will be televised on BYUtv.
