MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team made it close in the fourth quarter for the second-straight game, but again couldn't come all the way back, falling 81-74 to San Francisco at home on Saturday afternoon.
The Waves outscored San Francisco in both the third and fourth quarters, but couldn't get closer than within four after a 17 point lead by the visitors. Pepperdine falls to 5-13 overall and 1-6 in West Coast Conference play, while the Dons move to 12-7, 3-5 WCC.
The Dons came out hot in the first half, taking a 47-32 lead into the break thanks to 53.3 percent shooting from the field and 6-of-12 3-pointers in the first two quarters. Kalyn Simon paced the visitors with 16 points in the first half, including a four-point play just before the buzzer to give her team a 15-point advantage.
Olivia Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS) scored 13 of her game-high 21 points in the opening half, as the Waves shot 38.7 percent from the field and went 4-of-9 from beyond the arc. The Waves cut it to a six-point game midway through the second quarter, but San Francisco led by double-digits the rest of the way.
Pepperdine pulled it back to a nine-point game in the third quarter, outscoring the Dons 19-13 in the period. Keitra Wallace (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) scored a three-point play with just seconds left in the quarter to make it a single-digit deficit.
Pepperdine used a 7-0 run early in the fourth quarter, getting a three from Erica Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS) and then a fast-break dish to her sister Olivia for a layup to make it 63-59 with 7:41 to play. Out of a timeout, the Dons went on a 9-2 run of their own to push it back to a 72-61 game with just over three minutes to play.
The Waves had yet another run to answer, making it a 74-70 game with 1:03 to play, but it wasn't enough to come all the way back. San Francisco grabbed two late offensive rebounds and hit enough free throws to keep Pepperdine at bay.
Olivia Ogwumike finished with 21 points in the game, one shy of her career-high, and led the Waves with six rebounds. Erica Ogwumike posted 17 points on the day. The Dons had three players score in double-figures, led by 19 points from Taylor Proctor. Zhane Dikes had a double-double for the visitors, with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
