GULF SHORES, Ala. -- Kelley Larsen and Kellie Woolever ended their run with the Pepperdine sand volleyball team as AVCA All-Americans, after reaching the quarterfinals of today's AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Pairs Championships.
Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) and Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) got their morning started with a solid 21-16, 21-10 triumph over twin sisters Madison and McKenna Witt of Arizona.
The win advanced the Pepperdine pair to the quarterfinal round, where the met with another Arizona team in Madi Kingdon and Kaitlyn Leary. Larsen and Woolever rallied back from a first set loss to win 21-15 in the second, but an early Wildcat run in the third ended the Waves' day.
Team Kell(i)ey has played together the last three seasons, and has produced a record of 76-14 (.844). They rank #1 in the Pepperdine record book for number of victories. Additionally, Larsen leaves Malibu as the all-time winningest player with 101 total wins.
Both Larsen and Woolever were awarded All-American status in 2014 as well.
The Waves were also represented in the pairs championship by Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS/UCLA) and Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska). The duo was faced with a tough draw, contending with top-seeded Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes of USC in the opening round. The Waves battled fiercely, but succumbed to a 21-17, 21-14 loss to make an early exit.
Dykstra graduates from Pepperdine as a two-time AVCA All-American with a 75-20 (.789) career record.
