STOCKTON, Calif. -- The Pacific Tigers snapped the Pepperdine baseball team's five-game winning streak on Friday with a 5-4 win in Stockton.
The Waves went ahead early, but couldn't hold on to the lead as runs in the fourth and fifth put the Tigers ahead. The loss drops Pepperdine back to .500 with a 16-16 overall record and 6-5 conference record. It was the first loss for the Waves since March 24 at No. 8 USC.
The Waves struck first with a pair of runs in the second, getting sacrifice flies from Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS) and Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS) to go up 2-0. Pacific answered in the bottom half of the inning, however, scoring two runs on RBI singles to even the score.
Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) put the Waves back in front with a solo-home run in the third inning, but Pacific again had an answer as Lucas Halstead hit a two-run homer to put the home team up by one. An RBI single in the fifth gave Pacific a 5-3 lead.
Chris Fornaci (Walnut Creek, Calif./De La Salle HS) got one back for the Waves in the seventh with another sacrifice fly, but Pepperdine couldn't find another run down the stretch.
Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) had a 2-for-4 day at the plate and four different players drove in runs. Ryan Wilson (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) took his first loss of the season, giving up eight hits and five runs to fall to 5-1.
Louis Mejia was 3-for-4 for the Tigers, with an RBI and run scored. Halstead had two hits and two RBI. Will Lydon got the win on the mound, his first of the season for the Tigers. Pacific moves to 6-22 overall, 5-6 WCC with the win.
The teams wrap up their series tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Stockton. That game will be shown live on TheW.tv.
