MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine baseball (1-7) fell to the Yale Bulldogs (2-2) by a final of 7-1 Friday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Â
"That was a game of two true Friday night college pitchers going at it!" said Head Coach
Tyler LaTorre after the game. "
Tommy Scavone pitched well enough to win today, their guy just pitched better."
Â
It was a tough day at the plate for the Waves until the later stages of the game. The navy blue and orange had just one hit through the first eight innings, but it was a timely home run by
Max Aude, his first of the season, that tied the game at one apiece through three innings.
Â
"We knew going into today's matchup that it would be a tough task going up against one of the top arms in the country," continued LaTorre. "I loved our response to tie the game after they scored first. What a swing by
Max Aude. Unfortunately, we just couldn't do enough to get Ohman out of the game earlier. That's a testament to their staff and their team."
Â
The pendulum began to swing towards the Bulldogs' favor in the fifth when Kaiden Dossa dumped a base hit into shallow left field, bringing in Bryce Miller to put Yale back out in front. The Bulldogs continued to add on in the sixth with a pair of RBI doubles by Chris Diprima and Owen Turner, respectively. Then in the seventh, Yale pulled off a double steal that scored Dossa from third base, while Jack Dauer swiped second base. David Hanson tacked on a solo home run in the ninth and it was 7-1 Bulldogs.
Â
In the bottom of the ninth, Pepperdine threatened with the bases loaded but couldn't cash in and the 7-1 score stood as the final.
Â
Tommy Scavone was shoving through the first five frames but was bitten by the Bulldogs in the sixth. Consecutive doubles by Dauer and Diprima put Yale up by three and knocked Scavone out of the game.
Â
"We will bounce back tomorrow because that's what our program does," added LaTorre. "Quicker adjustments, more attention to the little things, and more focus on process will be the key the rest of the weekend."
