LA JOLLA, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's tennis team is through three rounds at the 126th annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championships, held at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. Kento Tanaka-Tamaki and Alexander Solonin went 3-0 on Friday to reach the round of 16 to lead the Waves.
Of Pepperdine's six doubles pairs entered into the draw, four advanced out of the opening round of 128. Nicholas Baez (Somis, Calif./Laurel Springs School) and Luca Marquard (Bensheim, Germany/Goeth Gymnasium Bensheim) joined Solonin (Tarzana, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) and Tanaka-Tamaki (Kihei, Hawaii/St. Anthony Junior-Senior HS) in the third round before bowing out.
Solonin and Tanaka-Tamaki opened the day with an 8-3 triumph over Addison Appleby and Christian Cargill (William & Mary) in the round of 128. The Waves then dispatched Andrew Schiffman and Xavier Smith, 8-4.
In the round of 32, Solonin and Tanaka-Tamaki downed Billy Rowe and Keegan Smith 8-5. The pair will face William and Mary's No. 1 doubles pair of Will Juggins and Aaron Chaffee in the round of 16 on Saturday. Guilherme Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia) and Rakshay Thakkar (Pune, India/St. Vincent's High School) defeated the Tribe tandem 6-4 in Thursday's dual meeting.
Baez and Marquard edged Joshua Finkelstein and Chris Ho in the tiebreaker to advance out of the opening round. The Pepperdine pair followed that up with and 8-2 victory versus Jake William and Roman Shenkiryk.
Their run would be stopped in the round of 32 by Karue Sell and Joseph Di Giulio with an 8-5 setback.
Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) and Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA), as well as Hadlich and Thakkar moved past the first round before falling short in the round of 64.
The Pacific Coast Doubles Championships continues on Saturday and concludes on Sunday.
