HONOLULU - The #1 Pepperdine sand volleyball team opened the 2015 campaign today against two top-10 ranked opponents. After dispatching #6 Loyola Marymount 4-1, the Waves suffered a 3-2 loss to #4 Hawaii on the Rainbow Wahine's home sand of Queen's Beach.

Following dual play, the doubles pairs were divided up in to six three-team pools for two more matches.

The day began with a dual vs. crosstown rival LMU. Pepperdine won four of the five matches in straight sets.

Sophie Asprey (Southlake, Texas/Liberty Christian/Tulane) and Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) served up the most dominant win of the dual, taking down Rachelle Suaava and Hannah Tedrow 21-11, 21-10 from the No. 4 spot in the lineup.

Freshman Corinne Quiggle (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) made her debut alongside senior Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) with an equally one-sided 21-12, 21-10 triumph over Ashley Maxfeldt and Taylor Scioscia.

Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS/UCLA) and Emily Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) won at No. 3, while Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska) and Delaney Knudsen (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) were victorious at No. 2.

LMU got their only point with a three-set win from the top spot in the lineup.

Strehlow and Cook, as well as Quiggle and Messing, continued the winning ways against Hawaii, but UH denied the Waves the dual-clinching third point.

Despite the loss, Pepperdine still boasts an all-time record of 53-3.

The day continued with pool play to determine the seeding of Saturday's pairs championship. The Waves won four of the six pools.

Asprey and Racich won Pool 1 with two straight-set victories. The Waves first topped UH's No. 1 duo of Nikki Taylor and Brittany Tiegs before earning their second win of the day over Suaava and Tedrow.

Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) and Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS) bounced back from a pair of three-set losses in dual action with two shut-out victories in pool play.

Knudsen and Dykstra took top honors in Pool 5, while Strehlow and Cook improved to 4-0 on the day with two more wins from Pool 6.

Pepperdine, Hawaii and Loyola Marymount continue action in Honolulu on Saturday with the conclusion of the pairs championship.
