FULLERTON, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team had eight hits, but couldn't find the runs it needed on Tuesday night, falling 3-0 to Cal State Fullerton on the road.

The Waves threatened throughout the ballgame, but couldn't come back from a 3-0 deficit against the Titans after CSUF scored in the second, third and fourth innings.

The Titans got RBI singles from Josh Vargas, Jerrod Bravo and Tyler Stieb in the consecutive innings to take the 3-0 lead and would hold it with four relief pitchers over the final five innings. Willie Kuhl got the win in relief for CSUF.

The Waves put runners in scoring position in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but stranded them each time. Pepperdine got runners on second and third in the seventh, after two-out hits from Matt Gelalich (La Verne, Calif./Bonita HS) and Brandon Caruso (Pasadena, Calif./Loyola HS), but Titan right-fielder Scott Hurst made a highlight reel catch after falling down trying to chase a sharply hit ball to right.

Pepperdine again threatened in the ninth, getting the first two runners on courtesy of an error and then single by Manny Jefferson (Lakewood, Calif./Lakewood HS). CSUF closer Tyler Petzmeier induced a popout to right field and then a double play to end the game, however.

Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS) and Jefferson were each 2-for-4 in the game, and Caruso was 2-for-5. Kiko Garcia (Chula Vista, Calif./St. Augustine HS) took the loss after getting the start for the Waves. Max Gamboa (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais HS) tossed 2.0 innings of scoreless relief for Pepperdine and Jordan Qsar (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) worked a scoreless eighth. Jayson Balades (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) gave up a run in 3.0 innings of work.

Willie Kuhl got the win for the Titans after tossing 2.0 innings of effective relief. Petzmeier recorded the save, his fourth of the year.

The Waves drop to 7-6 with the loss, while CSUF moves to 6-5. Pepperdine will be back in action this weekend when they head to Washington for a three-game showdown with the Huskies.
