USAV Collegiate Challenge Pairs Bracket
CHULA VISTA, Calif. - The Pepperdine sand volleyball team opened action today at the USAV Collegiate Challenge. After shutting out both CSU Bakersfield and Grand Canyon in dual play, the Waves began the single-elimination pairs championship.
The Waves (5-1) lost just one set in an otherwise dominant showing over the Roadrunners and Antelopes in dual play.
Emily Cook (Huntington Beach, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) and Delaney Knudsen (Valencia, Calif./Valencia HS) led Pepperdine in its opening match vs. Bakersfield. The duo, found at No. 3 in the lineup, dispatched Sophie Flemion and Sara Little 21-7, 21-9. They followed that up with a 21-12, 21-8 triumph over Grand Canyons' Alex Green and Brooke Razo.
Sophie Asprey (Southlake, Texas/Liberty Christian/Tulane) and Taylor Racich (Santa Barbara, Calif./Dos Pueblos HS) held Eryn Riley and Megan Johnson of Bakersfield to just four points in the opening stanza before securing the straight-set win, 21-13 in the second.
All-American pairs Kellie Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) and Kelley Larsen (Jamul, Calif./Christian HS), as well as Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska) and Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS/UCLA), both won their dual matches in straight sets from the top two spots in the lineup.
Although Katie Messing (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands HS) and Corinne Quiggle (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra HS) dropped a set to the Roadrunners at No. 5, the duo still won twice in to improve to a team-best 6-0 in dual play.
Pairs from Pepperdine, CSU Bakersfield and Grand Canyon, as well as TCU and Hawaii, were all placed in a 32-team bracket for a single-elimination pairs championship. Five of the Waves' six pairs all made it through to the second round.
Asprey and Racich took down Felmion and Little in straight sets, and will face top-seeded Brittany Tiegs and Nikki Taylor of Hawaii tomorrow. The Waves' No. 4 pair defeated the Rainbow Wahine's top tandem, 21-16, 21-19 last week in Honolulu.
Strehlow and Dykstra, up against TCU's No. 5 team of Chyanne and Chyna Perkins, won 21-8, 21-10.
After falling in the first set 19-21 to London Chow and Heather Boyan of Hawaii, Cook and Knudsen rebounded to win 21-13, 15-7.
Messing and Quiggle charted their 11th win of the season, topping the Horned Frogs' Ashley Smith and Macy Capen 21-16, 21-12
Woolever and Larsen, the defending USAV Collegiate Challenge pairs champions, received a first-round bye.
The conclusion of the pairs championship plays out on Sunday.
