WCC Player of the Week Announcement (Video)
MALIBU, Calif. - Junior Michaela Capannolo of the Pepperdine women's tennis team was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced today.
Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) has been solid for the Waves in the early portions of the 2015 dual season and boasts a team-best singles record of 4-1.
Last week, the newly ranked Capannolo -- #118 -- dispatched Danielle Wagland of #25 Texas, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. The win clinched the dual for the Waves at 4-2, and Pepperdine would go on to win by a 5-2 tally. It was #30 Pepperdine's first win over a top-25 opponent this season.
The Waves went on to defeat #17 TCU on Monday to improve to 4-2 on the season (although that contest was not considered in this week's award selection). Pepperdine's only two losses this year have been against perennial power USC. The Waves nearly upset the Trojans during the rematch in Malibu two weeks ago. Capannolo helped lift the Waves to a 3-2 lead, following her straight-set win over #45 Madison Westby. USC would go on to win 4-3.
Capannolo lost the race to clinch against the Horned Frogs on Monday. She was up 6-2, 5-2 when Laura Gulbe (Riga, Latvia/Murjāņu Sporta Ģimnāzija) clinched the dual victory for the Waves with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph at No. 2.
Capannolo has been found at the No. 4 position in the singles lineup in 2015.
The Waves return to action on Friday, February 27 when they host UCLA at 1:30 p.m.
