BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's basketball picked up a thrilling win on the road on Tuesday night, getting a last-second steal and layup to grab a 76-73 victory over CSU Bakersfield.
The teams traded the lead four times in the fourth quarter and with 27.3 seconds left the game was tied at 73-73. CSUB had the ball and Erika Williams drove into the lane with just under 15 seconds left. Erica Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS) came away with the steal for the Waves and pushed the ball ahead to Allie Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS), who got fouled and scored with 0.8 seconds left.
The win moves the Waves to 4-6 on the year, while CSUB falls to 1-8.
"We told them going into that last possession to stay in front defensively and don't reach for the steal unless it was right in front of them," said head coach Ryan Weisenberg. "Erica did a great job coming away with the ball and then making the extra pass at the end. Allie's finish was huge too, she kept her composure and finished through contact."
Green hit the free throw to seal the win as a desperation three fell short for the Roadrunners. It was Olivia Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS) who tied the game after CSUB had taken the lead with just under a minute to play, hitting two free throws with 27.3 seconds on the clock.
Erica Ogwumike finished with a game-high 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting. Paige Fecske (Studio City, Calif./Chaminade HS) and Keitra Wallace (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) each had 12 points on the night. Fecske also added nine assists and six rebounds. As a team Pepperdine shot 57.1 percent from the floor and hit 5-of-9 threes.
After a slow start in the first quarter, the Waves outscored CSUB 24-14 in the second quarter to take a 36-27 lead into the half. Erica Ogwumike hit back-to-back threes to give Pepperdine a 21-18 lead at the 6:24 mark. The Waves would push it to an 11-point advantage in the period.
Pepperdine shot 55 percent from the floor in the first half and hit 4-of-5 threes, while holding the Roadrunners to 28.6 percent shooting. The Waves also held a 21-14 rebounding advantage in the first half.
For the game, Pepperdine held the Roadrunners to 38 percent shooting and 11 threes on 34 attempts. The Waves also outrebounded CSUB 37-31.
"I thought we did a really good job getting out in transition today and making the extra pass," said Weisenberg. "We were also really good on the boards tonight and that's what got us into our transition game. Against a good rebounding team with some athletic bigs, I thought we did a good job boxing out, especially on the defensive end."
The Waves play next at New Mexico on Saturday. That game can be heard live on WaveCasts via PepperdineSports.com. It is the final regular season non-conference game for Pepperdine.
