MALIBU, Calif. " The Pepperdine women's basketball team turned in a strong second-half performance on Saturday to secure a 64-60 win over Denver at home in a non-conference matchup.
After scoring just 22 points in the first half, Pepperdine scored 21 points in each of the last two quarters to come away with the win and move to 3-6 in the year. Denver falls to 1-6 on the season. It was the second win in the Waves' three-game homestand this week.
After Pepperdine led heading into the final quarter, Denver came out and took an early lead in the fourth, but a Paige Fecske (Studio City, Calif./Chaminade HS) three put the Waves back in front. Erica Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS) would hit a three of her own to keep the Waves up 51-47, but the Pioneers scored two straight baskets, drawing a timeout from the Pepperdine bench with a tie game at the 5:59 mark. Denver would briefly pull ahead, but Allie Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS) knocked down a jumper to even the game at 57-57 with just over three minutes to play. A second-straight basket by Green would grab the lead back for Pepperdine.
The Waves took a 62-60 lead into the final minute and stretched it to a three-point advantage with a steal and then free throw with 41.7 seconds left. Denver then missed a three and with 19 seconds left another free throw made it 64-60. The solid defense continued as Kelsey Brockway (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS) blocked a shot attempt and then Ogwumike came up with a steal to seal the win for Pepperdine.
Ogwumike finished with 15 points to lead the Waves, while Green put up 13 points and Fecske had 10. Fecske also added six assists.
The Waves and Pioneers played close through much of the first half, until Denver went on a 7-0 run late in the second quarter to take a 24-17 lead with 2:12 left in the half. A Kayla Blair (Fairfield, Calif./Vanden HS) three for the Waves just before the half made it a 28-22 game going into the break. It was the only three for either team in the first half.
Denver shot 48 percent in the opening two periods, while the Waves scored at a 32.3 percent clip. The Pioneers' Paige Bradley led all scorers with 11 points and Ogwumike posted six for the Waves. Pepperdine did hold a 20-14 rebounding advantage in the first half, getting five boards from Ogwumike.
A 10-1 run out of the half, capped by threes from Fecske and Green, gave the Waves a 32-29 lead. The Waves went up by as much as five, outscoring Denver 21-14 in the third period, but a three just before the quarter break made it a 43-42 game in favor of Pepperdine heading to the fourth.
The Waves finished the game shooting 44.8 percent from the floor and 46.7 percent from 3-point territory. Pepperdine hit 6-of-8 long balls in the second half. Denver shot 49 percent from the floor. The Waves finished with a 30-27 rebounding advantage and got 20 points from the bench in the game.
Pepperdine hits the road next week, playing at Cal State Bakersfield on Tuesday and then at New Mexico on Saturday.
