Waves Undefeated on Day Two of USTA Clay Court Invitational

MALIBU, Calif. " It was a good Friday for the Pepperdine men's tennis squad, as the Waves took down opponents for an undefeated 7-0 mark on the day at the USTA Clay Court Invitational in Orlando, Fla. Two Pepperdine doubles pairs reached the semifinals of the tournament's gold and garnet brackets respectively and three singles competitors reached the quarterfinal rounds to be played tomorrow (Saturday).

The tournament, hosted by Florida State University, is being held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports and includes competition from Florida State, Baylor, UCF, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgia Tech, Miami, Michigan, Penn State, South Alabama, South Carolina, Stetson, TCU and Troy.

First in the gold bracket of the tournament, Guilherme Hadlich (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Avanço) and Gabriel Sidney (Curitiba, Parana, Brazil/Anglo Americano) excelled over Penn State's Matt Barry and Aws Laaribi, 8-6. The No. 2 seeded duo will challenge No. 4 seeded Gabriel Friedrich and Harrison O'Keefe of South Carolina tomorrow morning in the semifinal rounds.

The other Pepperdine pair competing at Clay Courts include Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) and Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA), who took care of competition in the garnet bracket after putting down Florida Gulf Coast University's Eduardo Alfonzo and Ricky Ventura with a commanding 8-2 final mark. The pair will face off against No. 4 seeded pair out of Florida State Jack Haffey and Michael Rinaldi tomorrow morning in the semifinal rounds.

All four Waves also excelled on the singles side with Iamachkine starting the action in the gold bracket by defeating FGCU's Ventura with a 6-2, 6-3 final decision. He will challenge nationally ranked No. 101 Nathan Rakitt out of Georgia Tech tomorrow in the quarterfinal round. Hadlich will play against William Little out of Baylor in the quarterfinal round of the gold bracket tomorrow after besting Loic Blanco from Stetson, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Pane took down his competitor in the garnet singles bracket, defeating Central Florida's Jack Thiessen 6-3, 6-1 to reach the quarterfinal round. He will take on Miami's Kevin Dondar tomorrow in an attempt to continue through the tournament.

Rounding out the Waves competition in the gold consolation bracket was Sidney. The freshman defeated FSU's nationally ranked No. 68 and No. 1 seeded, Michael Rinaldi, with a 4-6, 7-5, 10-2 result before besting Georgia Tech's Cole Fiegel 7-5, 6-3. He will challenge No. 4 seeded Runhoa Hua of Michigan or Marco Nunez of FSU tomorrow in the semifinals.
