MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's tennis team began the first day of the 2015 USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational this Thursday, excelling in both the doubles and singles first rounds. The tournament, hosted by Florida State University, is being held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports and includes competition from Florida State, Baylor, UCF, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgia Tech, Miami, Michigan, Penn State, South Alabama, South Carolina, Stetson, TCU and Troy.
The rounds of 64 and 32 were completed today in singles, as well the round of 16 on the doubles side. The tournament will run through the weekend with the championship matches taking place on Sunday.
Competing in doubles for the Waves included pair Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) and Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) as well as the duo of Guilherme Hadlich (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Avanço) and Gabriel Sidney (Curitiba, Parana, Brazil/Anglo Americano). All four Waves will also compete on the singles side which began in the afternoon.
First, both Pepperdine doubles partnerships defeated opponents in the first round of play.
Hadlich and Sidney went toe-to-toe in the doubles-gold bracket with Miami's Nile Clark and Kevin Dondar, besting the duo 8-4 to advance to the quarterfinal round. The quarterfinal round will take place tomorrow (Friday) morning against Penn State's Matt Barry and Aws Laaribi.
Iamachkine and Pane also earned success in the doubles-garnet bracket, defeating Central Florida's pair Reece Acree and Jack Thiessen, 8-6. The duo will continue in the quarterfinal round tomorrow morning against Eduardo Alfonzo and Ricky Ventura of Florida Gulf Coast University.
Hadlich, Iamachkine and Pane also won their respective singles match-ups. In the gold bracket, Hadlich put down tournament host-Florida State's Terrance Whitehurst, 6-2, 6-1, and will continue with the round of 16 tomorrow against Loic Blanco of Stetson. Iamachkine bested Troy's Daniel Bustamante with a pair of 6-2 sets, and will continue in the round of 16 tomorrow against FGCU's Ricky Ventura.
Pane is working through the garnet bracket on the singles side, advancing through the round of 32 after beating Stetson's Laurynas Antropikas by a commanding 6-1, 6-0 decision. He will take on UCF's Jack Thiessen in the round of 16. Sidney also competed in the singles bracket, falling in the first round to Central Florida's Christopher Barrus after a 6-4, 6-3 bout.
