LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team dropped an 83-63 decision on the road on Tuesday night at UNLV.
Pepperdine was never able to get going offensively as the Rebels pulled away in the second half. The loss drops the Waves to 0-3 on the year, while UNLV improves to 2-0.
The Waves were able to improve their shooting in the second half, but gave up 12 offensive rebounds in the last two quarters to thwart any chance of a run.
Keitra Wallace (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) finished with a team-high 14 points and Kayla Blair (Fairfield, Calif./Vanden HS) also scored in double figures with 11.
The Waves tried to cut the deficit in the second quarter, getting seven points from Blair in the quarter, but couldn't build the run they need to put a dent in the Rebel lead. UNLV stretched the advantage to 14 with a steal and layup at the buzzer going into the break.
The Rebels hit five 3-pointers and got 13 points from Aly Rhode in the first half. Blair's seven points led the Waves in the opening two quarters. Pepperdine was shooting as low as 23 percent in the first half, but improved its clip to 35.3 percent by the break. UNLV shot 44.7 percent in the first half.
Pepperdine finished the game shooting 39.3 percent and hit 4-of-8 3-pointers. UNLV shot 42.4 percent and hit six threes in the game.
The Waves will be back in action on Friday when they play their home opener against Cal State Fullerton. Tip-off for that game will be 7 p.m.
