ALBANY, N.Y. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team played another hard-fought game against a veteran team, but came up short on the road at Albany, losing 62-49.

Pepperdine held an eight-point lead midway through the third quarter, but couldn't hold on as Albany stormed back and finished the quarter on a 16-5 run. The Waves got 20 points out of Erica Ogwumike in her second collegiate game and 12 points from Olivia Ogwumike as the team falls to 0-2 on the year.

"We were a little surprised by their physicality early on, but once we adjusted and starting running our stuff I thought we had some really good stretches," said head coach Ryan Weisenberg. "We just needed to do a better job on the glass and not turn the ball over as much. Between those two things we gave them nearly 50 extra possessions and that's hard to come back from against a veteran team like that."

After falling behind 17-6 in the opening quarter, the Waves came out strong in the second, outscoring Albany 21-11 in the period to briefly take their first lead of the game just before the half. Erica Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS) knocked down a 3-pointer with just under 30 seconds on the clock to put Pepperdine up 27-26. Albany would get a jumper just before the half to take the lead into the locker room, but the Waves had the momentum.

Olivia Ogwumike (Cypress, Texas/Cypress Woods HS) led the charge in the second quarter, scoring 10 points in the period. She had 12 at halftime.

The Waves carried their momentum into the second half, hitting three early triples to take a 36-30 lead. Pepperdine went up by as much as eight, grabbing a 40-32 advantage on an Allie Green (Sacramento, Calif./Sacramento HS) 3-pointer with 6:52 left in the quarter.

Albany came back to take the lead by the fourth quarter and would hold the Waves to just four points in the fourth for the win. The Great Danes move to 1-0 with the season-opening win.

"We came out here to be challenged by good teams," said Weisenberg, whose team opened the season at Army on Friday. "Both games we did some things right, we just need to do them for the full 40 minutes. We've got some things to build on and we'll be ready for UNLV on Tuesday."

Pepperdine heads to Las Vegas for a matchup with the Rebels this week. That game can be heard live on WaveCasts.
