SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Pepperdine women's volleyball team fell in straight sets this Saturday afternoon in the final West Coast Conference match of the weekend. After finishing Thursday's match-up with a win over San Francisco, the Waves hit the court ready to compete, but the Broncos had the edge and shut the match down 27-25, 25-19 and 25-13.
As a team, the Waves posted a .179 hitting percentage after tabbing 33 kills and 14 errors in 106 attempts. The team also picked up 12 block assists and one block solo while adding 37 digs on the day. The loss dropped the 2015 overall record to 17-12 and the WCC record to an even 8-8.
Freshmen Jenna Tunnell (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS), Tarah Wylie (Indianapolis, Ind./Cathedral HS) and Heidi Dyer (San Clemente, Calif./Saddleback Valley Christian HS) led the team on the offensive.
Tunnell tabbed a .350 success rate on the attack after tallying nine kills and two errors in 20 attempts, while tying for the team high with three blocks. Wylie tabbed eight kills, three block assists and one block solo, while Dyer was good for seven kills, four digs and two block assists.
Senior setter Becca Strehlow (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS/UCLA) led the team with 27 assists, while helping the effort with three kills. Senior libero Lara Dykstra (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union HS/Nebraska) led the Waves with 13 digs and posted one service ace.
The first set was any teams to win and both were evenly matched, working towards a 7-7 tie early in the set. The Waves and Broncos continued to fight point-by-point, reaching another tie score at the 16-16 mark. The match continued again in head-to-head fashion, and fans once again saw the score even at 25-25 before Santa Clara ran away with the edge towards a 27-25 set one win.
The second set was close through the beginning, reaching an 11-11 tie, before the Broncos ran away with the set. The home team quickly amassed a 21-13 advantage over the visiting Waves. It was a deficit Pepperdine could not work back from, eventually falling 25-19 to go down 2-0 on the day.
Despite a strong start in the third set by the Waves, the Broncos cruised to a 15-6 lead. Pepperdine continued to fight strong, but were again unable to overcome the opposition, falling 25-13 to end the match in a straight-set WCC loss.
