Nov. 13, 2015 MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine women's basketball head coach Ryan Weisenberg announced the signing of three recruits to National Letters of Intent this week.
It is the third recruiting class of Weisenberg's tenure and comes on the heels of seven signed players last year. The Waves bring in two posts and a point guard with this year's class, including a pair of high school teammates.
Hayley Duren - 6-4 - F - Davie, Fla. - American Heritage HS
Duren is a long and athletic forward out of American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla. She has averaged 13 points, 10 rebounds, 3.5 blocks and 2.5 assists over her last two seasons of prep ball, leading her team to a district championship and garnering numerous individual accolades. Duren was named All-Broward County second team as a sophomore and junior, and earned honorable mention as a freshman. Playing at Archbishop McCarthy as a freshman, Duren set the school record for blocks in a season with 126 and set the single-game record with 12 blocks in a contest. Duren played her AAU ball with Tampa Thunder Elite - Team Dupree.
Coach Weisenberg on Hayley: "Hayley has a big personality that makes everyone feel great when they are around her. She brings a Lisa Leslie style with size and athleticism to the court, and is going to be a force to deal with. Hayley's skill set will fit perfect with the up-tempo style that we are creating at Pepperdine. She is what Waves are all about; great teammate, competitor, and all-around person. We are excited to add such a quality student-athlete to the Pepperdine family."
Duren on why she chose Pepperdine: "I decided to commit to Pepperdine because it has the best of both worlds; a great basketball program and high academics. The atmosphere and culture throughout the campus and student body are unlike any other school I visited. It was a clear decision for me that Pepperdine would be my new home, where I would pursue my college degree and collegiate career. Words cannot describe the excitement I have to attend Pepperdine."
Barbara Sitanggan - 5-6 - PG - Cerritos, Calif. - Troy HS
Sitanggan is an accomplished point guard out of Troy High School in Orange County. She was already garnered league MVP honors as a sophomore and junior, and set the school season record for steals last year. Sitanggan has also been named Orange County Freshman and Sophomore of the Year in those respective seasons and was an All-State honoree as a freshman. She played her AAU ball with Salesian and West Coast Premier Black.
Coach Weisenberg on Barbara: "We have a Sue Bird type of point guard joining the program next year in Barbara. She is capable of dishing out ten assists and/or scoring big points. Her quiet demeanor off the court changes into a fierce competitor as soon as she steps in between the lines. Barbara is one of the most thoughtful and caring people you will ever get to know and we are excited to have her competing at Pepperdine."
Sitanggan on why she chose Pepperdine: "I mean, come on, it's Malibu!"
Rebecca Lazuka - 6-2 - F - Fullerton, Calif. - Troy HS
A teammate of Sitanggan, Lazuka also played at Troy HS and has an impressive prep resume. She holds the school record for career blocks and has been a team captain for three years. Lazuka earned All-CIF Southern Section and 1AA first team honors, and garnered all-league honors in both 2014 and 2015. Lazuka was named one of the Top Post Players and Top 10 Players overall to watch by the OC Register. She earned the team's Defensive Player of the Year award in 2013 and Impact Player of the Year in 2014. Lazuka played her AAU ball with the Pumas, OC Rhythm and West Coast Premier Black.
Coach Weisenberg on Rebecca: "Rebecca brings two of the most important qualities every great program needs; toughness and an enforcer attitude. She is going to own the paint on defense and even more importantly own the boards. Every one of her teammates is going to be sending thank you cards for the amazing screens she sets and all-out tough mentality she is bringing to the program. She is a beast on the court, an excellent student and more importantly an excellent person off the court. We are excited to see her start her college journey at Pepperdine."
Lazuka on why she chose Pepperdine: "From the second I stepped on campus, I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be. God has a plan and a purpose for all of us. Pepperdine University is meant to be part of my journey in life. I just felt this so intensely my first visit to the campus. Pepperdine is my dream school and I am so grateful to call it home for the next four years and to be able to contribute to the university life, the women's basketball team and the community of Malibu."
