SPOKANE, Wash. " Senior Katie Engel posted a career-best 28th place at the West Coast Conference Championships on Saturday to lead the Pepperdine women's team at the league meet.
On the men's side, freshman Nick Heath (Scotts Valley, Calif./Scotts Valley HS) led the way with a 39th-place finish.
The WCC Championships were hosted by Gonzaga at the Plantes Ferry Sports Stadium. The host Bulldogs won the women's race, while BYU was the men's champion. The Waves finished eighth in the men's competition and 10th in the women's event.
Engel (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima HS) improved from 56th as a freshman to 44th as a sophomore to 30th as a junior and finally to 28th place as a senior at the league championships. She ran the 6K in 22:18.9 on Saturday. Also scoring for the women were junior Lindsay Sheaffer (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS), senior Mariah Gondeiro (Raynesford, Mont./Belt HS/Rocky Mountain College), senior Rachel Rant (Boise, Idaho/Boise HS) and freshman Elise Froebe (Lake Forest Park, Wash./Shorecrest HS).
Heath's time was 26:27.5 in the men's 8K. The next four Waves were sophomore Nick Blanchard (Portland, Conn./Portland HS), junior Ben Fox (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain HS), sophomore Kyle Cajero (Tucson, Ariz./Pusch Ridge Christian Academy) and sophomore Rudy Gonzalez (Whittier, Calif./California HS).
The Waves will next run at the NCAA West Regional Championships in Seattle, Wash., on November 13.
