Waves Bow out of SoCal Intercollegiate Championships

LOS ANGELES, Calif.
- The Pepperdine men's tennis team bowed out of the 59th annual Southern California Intercollegiate Championships hosted by UCLA at the Los Angeles Tennis Center this Thursday afternoon.

The tournament began Wednesday morning with singles and doubles qualifying rounds and will end this Sunday (Nov. 1) with both championships. The field included singles opponents and doubles pairs from Pepperdine, UCLA, USC, Cal Poly, Concordia, Azusa Pacific, San Diego, Loyola Marymount, UC Santa Barbara, BYU and UC San Diego.

Guilherme Galvao (Sao Paulo, Brazil/ColegioAvanço), Scotland Garapedian (Agoura Hills, Calif./Fusion Academy) and Nicholas Baez (Somis, Calif./Laurel Springs School) all competed in the tournament with Galvao and Garapedian pairing up on the doubles side and all three challenging opponents in the singles bracket.

Galvao and Garapedian fell in the qualifying doubles round of 32 after facing off against Azusa Pacific's Olger Van Gent and Shepherd Newcomb with an 8-5 final result.

Galvao opened the singles bracket with a pair of 6-1 sets to fall to UC Santa Barbara's Miles Seemann. He then dropped out of the tournament after falling to APU's Newcomb with a 6-4, 6-0 final mark. Garapedian put up a battle in the round of 32 against Cal Poly's Rafael Lenhard with 3-6, 6-1 and 10-3 set scores. He bowed out of the tournament after falling in the consolation bracket to Alexandre Miaule of UC San Diego.

Baez closed out the Waves performances first with a loss to Andrew Riminton of UCSB, 6-2, 6-3, and then in the consolation bracket with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat by Alexander Bourgeois of Loyola Marymount.

Next, the Waves will head to Orlando, Fla. from November 5-8 to compete at the USTA Collegiate Clay Court Invitational.
