TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
MALIBU, Calif. - It was a hard-fought battle this Monday afternoon at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center as sophomore doubles pair Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) and Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) battled for the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship title.
The Waves faced off against nationally ranked No. 17 San Diego duo Jordan Angus and Philip Vittek, falling in two sets, 6-4, 6-3, to finish the tournament as runners-up.
It was quite a road for the Pepperdine pair, entering the tournament as underdogs, but ending the tournament as a noteworthy doubles duo. They first defeated Grand Canyon's Alexander Roggenkamp and Felix Shueller, 8-3, to start paving the way to the championship match.
Then, in the round of 16, Iamachkine and Pane took down No. 2 seed and nationally ranked No. 31 pair out of San Diego State, Frederik Gelbrich and Hendrik Jebens, by a commanding 8-3 decision.
The winning ways continued in the quarterfinals as the Waves never let up, beating No. 7-seed Trent Botha and Naoki Takeda of Arizona with an 8-4 final mark.
Pepperdine was challenged in the semifinals by No. 4 seed Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Wiele Sell of UCLA, taking the first set by a narrow 6-5 (5) victory. The Waves then buckled down in the second set to demand a 6-0 shutout over the Bruins to advance to the championship match-up.
Although the result favored the opposition, the Waves duo carved a place in the minds of the opposition as they head into future competition. Next up for Pepperdine is the SoCal Intercollegiate Championships in Los Angeles, Calif. The tournament will begin on October 28 and end with the championship matches to be played on October 31.
