MALIBU, Calif. - It was a successful day on the court for the Pepperdine men's tennis team, as the Waves recorded two singles victories and two doubles wins at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship. The Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center and the Crest Courts on the picturesque Pepperdine University Malibu, Calif. campus serve as host for the event that brought hundreds of top competitors.
Guilherme Hadlich (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Avanço) and Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS) each recorded singles victories while Hadlich and doubles partner Gabriel Sidney (Curitiba, Parana, Brazil/Anglo Americano) and Iamachkine and partner Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) each advanced on the doubles side.
In singles, Hadlich bested the opposition, Cal Poly's Corey Pang, 6-1, 6-1 to work his way into the round of 16 to be played tomorrow against Felix Schueller of Grand Canyon. Iamachkine won his singles match 6-4, 6-2 over UCSBs Anders Holm and will play Logan Smith of USC tomorrow to continue with tournament play. Also competing on the singles side was Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS), who fell 6-2, 6-1, against Hendrik Jebens out of San Diego State.
In doubles, Hadlich and Sidney best two opposing partnerships today. They first defeated UCLA contenders Max Cressy and Austin Rapp, 8-3, before continuing success with an 8-6 victory over Adrian Legarreta and Mitchell Maroscher from Grand Canyon. The pair is paired up against No. 1 seed and nationally ranked No. 17 San Diego partners, Jordan Angus and Filip Vittek.
Iamachkine and Pane started the day with an 8-3 defeat of Alexander Roggenkamp out of Grand Canyon and continued with another 8-3 win over No. 2 seed and nationally ranked No. 31 pair Frederik Gelbrich and Hendrik Jebens from San Diego State. The duo will take on Arizona's Trent Botha and Naoki Takeda tomorrow in the round of 16.
Three Waves also competed in the back draw with Sidney defeating Hawai'i single Felix Albert, 4-6, 6-4, 11-9. He advanced through the next round of the bracket with a walkover after Cal Poly's Joshua Ortlio withdrew.
Scotland Garapedian (Agoura Hills, Calif./Fusion Academy) and Logan Hall (Paradise Valley, Ariz./IMG Academy) both lost in consolation, with Garapedian dropping 0-6, 6-4, 6-10 San Diego's James Ponwith and Hall falling 1-6, 3-6, to Filip Vittek out of San Diego.
