MALIBU, Calif. - The #47-ranked Pepperdine men's tennis team was unable to power past #21 South Florida in today's home-opening dual, falling 5-2. Sophomores Guilherme Hadlich and Tom Hill scored points for the Waves.

USF stuck first, claiming the doubles point with wins from the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Pepperdine's No. 1 duo of Hadlich (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil/Colégio Energia) and Lautaro Pane (Puerto Madryn, Argentina/SEADEA) were up a break, 5-3, on #44-ranked Oliver Pramming and Justin Roberts when action was suspended.

The Bulls went ahead 2-0 before Hadlich put a point on the board for the Waves. The sophomore defeated Ignacio Gonzalez 6-3, 6-3 from the No. 2 spot.

Rakshay Thakkar (Pune, India/St. Vincent's HS) edged out Sasha Gozun 7-4 in the first-set tiebreaker, but was unable to hold on for the victory, falling 7-5, 6-1.

Roberts provided the clincher for USF, outlasting Pedro Iamachkine (Lima, Peru/Nebraska HS), 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Tom Hill (Birmingham, England/K12 International Academy) grinded out a close win against Everth Dzib at No. 6 to score the Waves' second point of the afternoon. The sophomore bounced back from a 2-4 deficit in the first to win 7-5. The second set proved to be just as close, with Hill emerging the victor following a 7-4 triumph in the second-set tiebreaker.

Pane was able to force a third set after dropping his first, but fell 10-6 in the super tiebreaker.

Pepperdine concludes the week's action tomorrow, Feb. 1 with a 1 p.m. contest against Boise State. The Waves beat the Broncos 4-2 last week at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
