SPOKANE, Wash. - The Pepperdine women's basketball team fell in a close game on the road, losing to Gonzaga in Spokane on Thursday night, 73-64.

Pepperdine closed it to within four points late, but couldn't find the basket it needed as the Bulldogs made 11-of-12 free throws in the final 1:24 of play.

The Waves had been down by as much as 12 points in the second half, but with two minutes to play, the visitors went on a 7-0 run to make it a 62-58 ball game with 1:24 left. Keitra Wallace (Brea, Calif./Brea Olinda HS) hit a pair of free throws and then made a three-point play to pull the Waves within four.

Pepperdine couldn't find another bucket until there were just 10 seconds left, hitting a pair of threes that were too little, too late.

Wallace and Bria Richardson (Hawthorne, Calif./Serra HS) led the Waves in the game with 18 points each. 13 of Wallace's points came in the second half.

Elle Tinkle scored 18 of her 22 points in the second half for the Bulldogs to help seal the win for the home team. Tinkle led all scorers in the game and hit four late free throws.

The Waves fell behind by six midway through the first half, but out of a timeout went on a 7-0 run, grabbing a 19-18 lead with 6:54 left in the half on a Richardson jumper. Gonzaga responded with a 9-0 run over the next 2:30, taking a 35-29 lead into the break.

Richardson led all scorers in the first half with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting.

For the game, the Waves shot just 34.4 percent, but hit 8-of-22 threes and held Gonzaga to 25 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs scored 32 of their 73 points in the paint. Pepperdine was near perfect from the foul line on the night, hitting 12-of-13 free throws.

The loss drops the Waves to 6-11 overall, 1-5 WCC and moves Gonzaga to 13-4, 6-0 WCC, keeping the Zags atop the conference standings. Pepperdine has now played the top five teams in the WCC standings over its last five games.

The Waves will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Portland in another WCC road game. That contest will tip off at 1 p.m. and can be heard on WaveCasts.
