PRINCETON, N.J. - Stefan Menichella of the Pepperdine men's tennis team earned his first collegiate tournament title today during his first outing of the 2014-15 season. The sophomore won the Lenz Draw at the Princeton Invitational after posting his fourth-consecutive singles victory.

The weekend was a successful one for the Waves. In addition to Menichella's (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) title run, Tom Hill (Birmingham, England/K12 International Academy) reached the quarterfinals of the Pagoda Draw.

"I am really proud of the way Stefan and Tom represented Pepperdine this weekend," said head coach Marcelo Ferreira. "They played with fire and pride and displayed excellent sportsmanship. Stefan played very smart tennis and dealt with adversities in all matches really well. He's shown a lot of maturity and technical improvements this weekend."

Menichella, who was the only freshman consistently in the singles lineup last spring, posted three straight-set victories on Friday and Saturday to punch his ticket into Sunday's final

The sophomore Wave was faced with Joshua Yablon, a sophomore for Princeton competing on his home court.

Menichella stuck first, winning decisively in set one by a 6-2 tally. Yablon battled his way back into the match in the second frame, and escaped with a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker to push the contest to a third and final set.

The third set played out close, but Menichella earned a late break to take the 7-5 triumph, and with it, his first collegiate title.

The Waves return to action on Oct. 10-12 with the Battle in the Bay Classic in San Francisco, Calif.
