MALIBU, Calif. - The First Annual Beach Volleyball Fundraiser, featuring a 4-on-4 tournament at Zuma Beach, is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 12, announced head coach Nina Matthies. The money raised will directly benefit the two-time national championship winning Pepperdine sand volleyball team.
"We are so thrilled to host this event," said Matthies, who was voted the inaugural AVCA Sand Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2013. "It gives us the opportunity to reach out, get to know and of course have a little fun with the members of the beach volleyball community and our alumni, as well as our fans, friends and family."
Participants in the 4-on-4 tournament are asked to arrive at Zuma Beach, near the east end of the beach where the Waves play and train, at 8:30 a.m. for registration and team draws. Play will begin at 9 a.m. and the minimum entrance donation is $100. Donations will be gift receipted by the University for tax purposes.
It is advised that participants and spectators bring their own water, beach chairs, umbrellas, sunblock, etc.
Due to NCAA rules, high school aged players - male or female - will not be able to participate.
All other age groups, as well as all skill levels, are welcome.
Long-sleeved Pepperdine sand volleyball t-shirts will be given to all tournament entrants, with the first and second-place teams taking home additional prizes.
All funds raised support the ongoing development of the Pepperdine sand volleyball team. The Waves have been at the forefront of the sport of sand volleyball ever since it began in the spring of 2012. Now with three seasons in the books, Pepperdine has emerged as the dominant program with two national team titles to its credit and a nation-leading 12 All-Americans. Money will go directly towards team travel, equipment and other team-related expenses.
