NAPA, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's tennis team concluded play at the Napa Valley Collegiate Invitational today. Alexander Solonin, Rakshay Thakkar and Jonah Kral all won in singles on the final day to end the weekend on a high note.
After a bit of a slow start in doubles, the Waves stormed back in singles and won three of the day's four matches.
Thakkar (Pune, India/St. Vincent's HS), battling in his third three-set match of the weekend, rebounded from a loss in the first set tiebreaker against Alexandros G. Vakouftsis and won 6-4, 6-1 in the final two sets. It was the senior's second win of the weekend in three attempts.
Sophomore Solonin (Tarzana, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) split sets with Johan Samuelsson before controlling the tempo of the final frame to the tune of a 6-2 triumph.
Kral (Longview, Texas/Austin Tennis Academy), competing in his first tournament as a freshman, picked up his first collegiate victory and shut out Jakob Keppelmann 6-4, 6-2.
The Waves continue the fall season next weekend, Sept. 19-21, with the Princeton Invitational.
