Racquet Club Collegiate Invititational Website

MIDLAND, Texas - The Pepperdine women's tennis team got the Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational underway on Saturday, after a rain-soaked Friday postponed play. Lorraine Guillermo and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai highlighted the full day of tennis, reaching the final rounds in both singles and doubles.

Because no matches were completed yesterday, doubles matches were decided by a single 6-game pro set. Likewise, singles matches were contested as an 8-game pro set, in order to get the tournament back on schedule.

The day began with two rounds of doubles, with Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) winning twice to reach the quarterfinals. The Wave duo, who held down the No. 1 spot in the dual lineup last spring, shut out Rachel Daniell and Elaine Simon of Alabama-Birmingham, 6-0, before allowing just one game in their win over Southern Methodist's Dasha Sharapova and Maxine Schmidt.

Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) and Christine Maddox (Santa Monica, Calif./Santa Monica HS) topped Shannon Beckett and Maddie Moore of Texas State before bowing out in the round of 32.

Guillermo and Runglerdkriangkrai continued the winning ways in singles. Guillermo, the tournament's No. 1 overall seed and 2013 defending singles champion, earned a first-round bye before charting two 8-3 decisions to advance.

Runglerdkriangkrai upset fifth-seeded Maggy Lehmichke of Nebraska in the round of 16, 8-4, to punch her ticket into the quarterfinals.

The Racquet Club Collegiate Invitational concludes on Sunday.
