MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine women's tennis standout Lorraine Guillermo received an at-large bid to compete at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, held next week at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) is now part of a 32-player singles field that includes USTA/ITA Regional champions, USTA/ITA National Small College Super Bowl champions, consolation champions and semifinalists from the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships, and handful of at-large and wildcard entries.
At-large and wildcard entries are awarded to players based on their results at regionals and the All-American championships, as well as rankings and prior achievements.
Guillermo reached the title matches in both singles and doubles at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship two weeks ago. Playing while sick, Guillermo and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy) narrowly lost to Giuliana Olmos and Gabby Smith of USC in the finals, 7-6, 7-6.
After the doubles final, a showdown between the top two seeds in the singles draw would not come to fruition as Pepperdine's ace was too sick to continue on. Top-seeded Zoe Scandalis was crowned the Southwest Regional Champion.
Guillermo, ranked #20 in the ITA preseason singles rankings, is 9-1 this fall. This is Guillermo's third bid to the national tournament. As a sophomore, she reached the semifinals of the doubles draw alongside the now graduated Khunpak Issara. Last year, she made her debut in the 32-person singles draw.
The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships begin on Thursday, November 6 and runs through Sunday, November 9.
