TOURNAMENT CENTRAL/RESULTS

MALIBU, Calif. - Stefan Menichella of the Pepperdine men's tennis team delivered a dominant victory in the round of 16 at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships, but saw his run come to an end in the quarterfinals to the tournament's #2 seed.

Two Waves reached the round of 16 in Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) and Rakshay Thakkar (Pune, India/St. Vincent's HS).

Thakkar, coming off of two three-set triumphs on Saturday, faced third seeded and #45-ranked Gage Brymer (UCLA) today. After starting out strong and winning the first frame 6-3, the Bruin returned the favor and won the next set by the same score. The Wave was unable to get back on track and fell 6-1 in the third to make his exit out of the tournament.

Menichella got his Sunday off to a blazing start, dispatching Tyler Pham (UC Irvine) easily, 6-2, 6-1.

In the quarterfinals, Menichella was faced with #2-seeded Jonny Wang out of USC. After falling behind a break early, Wang served for the match at 5-4, but Menichella came through in the clutch to knot the score 5-5. The duo headed to a tiebreaker two games later, and still played point-for-point with one another.

Tied 4-4 in the tiebreaker, the Trojan scored three unanswered points to clinch the first set. He rolled with the momentum in set two, taking a 4-0 lead, but Menichella won three of the next four games to narrow the deficit. Wang held on in the end, winning set two 6-3 to advance to the semifinals.

Although the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships will continue in Malibu on Monday and Tuesday, this ends the Waves' run at the tournament.
