MALIBU, Calif. - It was another full day of tennis in Malibu as action continued at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship. Pepperdine's own Rakshay Thakkar and Stefan Menichella both won in three sets to advance to the singles round of 16.

Thakkar (Pune, India/St. Vincent's HS), who was coming off of a marathon three-set win yesterday in the round of 64, went right back to battle today in the next round. Up against Jonas Meinzer of San Diego State, the Wave dropped the first set 6-2 before rebounding with a 6-3 triumph in the second. The two fought all the way to a tiebreaker in the deciding frame, and Thakkar emerged with the 7-4 triumph to advance.

Sophomore Stefan Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) will join Thakkar in the round of 16, after winning a three setter of his own this afternoon. After dropping the first set in the tiebreaker to UCLA's Austin Rapp, Menichella bounced back to win 6-3, 6-4

"I am very pleased with how Rakshay and Stefan fought today," said head coach Marcelo Ferreira. "They were able to handle adversity really well and make the adjustments they needed to win. I'm especially impressed with Rakshay, and how fit he is this fall compared to last year."

Thakkar will face third-seeded and #45-ranked Gage Brymer (UCLA) on Sunday, while Menichella is set to play UC Irvine's Tyler Pham.

The Waves nearly saw three reach the round of 16, but Tom Hill (Birmingham, England/K12 International Academy) fell just short of the upset. After winning the first set, Hill went up by a break in the second but was unable to hold on against #122 Thorsten Bertsch. The San Diego State ace won 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Hill and Kento Tanaka-Tamaki (Kihei, Hawaii/St. Anthony Junior-Senior HS) saw their doubles run come to an end as well. The pair lost to #3-seeded Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Sell, 8-4

Action at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships continues on Sunday, with matches beginning at 9 a.m.
