MALIBU, Calif. - Tom Hill, Rakshay Thakkar and Stefan Menichella of the Pepperdine men's tennis team advanced to the Round of 32 after a successful first day at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional being hosted by the Waves.

Thakkar (Pune, India/St. Vincent's High School) had the biggest win of the day for Pepperdine, as he knocked off a seeded player in USC's Nick Crystal, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, in the Round of 64. Earlier in the day, Thakkar defeated UC Santa Barbara's Morgan Mays, 7-5, 6-1.

Play continues on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center and Crest Courts. The tournament runs through Tuesday.

Hill (Birmingham, England/K12 International Academy) and Menichella (Santa Barbara, Calif./University HS) both had first-round byes. In the Round of 64, Hill bested Loyola Marymount's Othar Kordsachia, 6-4, 6-2, while Menichella handled Hawaii's Chas Okamaoto, 6-4, 3-0 (retired).

Three Waves bowed out in the Round of 128: Jonah Kral (Longview, Texas/Austin Tennis Academy), Alexander Solonin (Tarzana, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS) and Kento Tanaka-Tamaki (Kihei, Hawaii/St. Anthony Junior-Senior HS), as did Logan Hall (Paradise Valley, Ariz./IMG Academy) in the Round of 64. Consolation rounds will begin on Saturday.

In the doubles Round of 64, two of three Pepperdine teams advanced. The duo of Kral and Solonin moved ahead via a walkover, while Hill and Tanaka-Tamaki beat a team from Hawaii 8-4. Menichella and Thakkar fell to a team from USC.
