MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine's late rally fell just short in a 5-4 non-conference loss to UC Santa Barbara Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium. The Waves (18-13) loaded the bases with one out in the ninth in a two-run game, but the Gauchos (17-14) made the plays they needed to in the second meeting between the two teams in eight days.

Trailing 2-0 after the first inning, Pepperdine answered with a two-run second. Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) doubled down the left field line and scored on an RBI doubled down the right field line from Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawaii/Konawaena HS). Ranny Lowe (Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS) drove in Yamaguchi on an RBI single to right.

Pepperdine took a 3-2 lead in the third on a two-out, run-scoring single from Yamaguchi, who finished 2-for-3 with his fifth double of the year.

UCSB reclaimed the lead for good with a two runs in the fifth on a two-run homer from Robby Nesovic, his first of the season. The Gauchos capitalized on two Pepperdine errors in the sixth to make it a 5-3 margin.

In the home half of the ninth, the Waves made it interesting. After a leadoff single from Lowe, Devin Carter (Temecula, Calif./Temecula Valley HS) connected for a pinch-hit single. After a sacrifice from Hutton Moyer (San Diego, Calif./Cathedral Catholic HS), Pepperdine loaded the bases when Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) was hit by a pitch. Sam Meyer (Los Altos, Calif./St. Francis HS) drove in Moyer with an RBI single to make it 5-4 with one out, but the Waves finished with a strikeout and a fly out to end the contest.

Lowe finished his day 2-for-3, while Langlois also collected a pair of hits on a 2-for-4 day, which included his 13th double of the year. Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) turned in a 2-for-4 day and Meyer went 2-for-5.

Matt Maurer (Medford, Ore./North Medford HS) suffered the loss, allowing four runs off 10 hits and struck out one in 4.0 innings. Jackson McClelland tossed 5.0 innings in relief, allowing one unearned run off one hit and struck out three Gauchos.

Connor Baits (1-0) collected the win for UCSB, going 6.0 innings, allowing three runs with six strikeouts. Greg Mahle collected his first save of the year, working through a big jam in the ninth with a strikeout.

Pepperdine returns to West Coast Conference action when it opens a crucial series at preseason favorite San Diego Friday, April 12. First pitch against the Toreros is set for 6:00 p.m. at Fowler Park.
