SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Pepperdine scored first, but San Diego scored more in a 4-2 West Coast Conference setback Saturday night at Fowler Park. The Waves (19-14, 7-4 WCC) struggled to command the strike zone all night, issuing nine walks and the Toreros (20-14, 6-5 WCC) capitalized just enough to even the series at a game apiece.

Things looked good for Pepperdine early as it took a 1-0 lead in the first. Austin Davidson (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard HS) singled and scored on an RBI single from Kolten Yamaguchi (Kona, Hawaii/Konawaena HS). The lead lasted just one pitch into the home half of the first as All-American Kris Bryant clubbed his 15th home run of the year to center field to tie the contest at 1-1.

All told, the Toreros scored four unanswered runs with single runs in the first, second, third and seventh frames. It could have been much worse as righthander Corey Miller (Laguna Nigel, Calif./Serra HS) walked four batters in the second inning with two outs, before getting a strikeout to halt the damage. Miller got strong defensive plays in the outfield from center fielder Aaron Brown (Chatsworth, Calif./Chatsworth HS) and right fielder Ranny Lowe (Granada Hills, Calif./Notre Dame HS).

Left fielder Bryan Langlois (Oak Park, Calif./Oak Park HS) enjoyed a strong day at the plate, finishing 2-for-3. Trailing 4-1 in the ninth, Langlois led off the frame with a solo homer to left field, to close the gap to two runs, but after a one-out double from Lowe, the Waves could not generate another hit.

Miller (4-3) allowed four runs on six hits and struck out one and walked seven, grinding through seven innings. Dylan Covey (2-3) collected the victory for the Toreros, allowing one run on three hits with six strikeouts.

Pepperdine takes on the San Diego in the rubber match Sunday. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. at Fowler Park in a contest featuring a live audio broadcast via WaveCasts.
