MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine struggled mightily offensively and unfortunately Portland had no such problems in a 73-34 West Coast Conference loss Saturday afternoon at Firestone Fieldhouse. The Waves (4-17, 1-9 WCC) managed just six points in the first 10 minutes of the contest and the Pilots (10-14, 5-6 WCC) took full advantage in seizing their fifth win in six attempts.
No Wave scored more than six points. Kelsey Brockway (Rolling Hills, Calif./Palos Verdes HS), Bria Richardson (Hawthorne, Calif./Serra HS) and Monet McNally (Santa Clarita, Calif./L.A. Baptist HS) each scored six points for Pepperdine.
Pepperdine shot a frigid .177 (11-62) from the field and attempted 31 field goals each half. The Waves went just 1-for-18 from 3-point range (.056). The Pilots sizzled offensively, connecting on .441 (26-59) and finished the second half connecting on .556 (15-27) after the intermission.
Portland converted 22 Wave turnovers into 25 points, while Pepperdine scored just nine points of 20 Pilot miscues.
Jasmine Wooton scored a game-high 16 points, Kari Luttinen added 15 points and Alexis Byrd chipped in 13 to lead Portland.
Pepperdine returns to action when it travels to San Diego for a rare Monday night contest at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Tip-off time against the Toreros is set for 7:00 p.m. in a game featuring an audio broadcast via WaveCasts.
