SAN DIEGO - The Pepperdine women's tennis team continued their success at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship in San Diego. The Waves were victorious in three doubles matches in addition to two singles matches.
The team of Michaela Capannolo (Melbourne, Australia/Genazzano FCJ College) and Yuki Chiang (Ojai, Calif./Campbell Hall HS) were successful over favorites Kaitlin Ray and Chanelle Van Nguyen of UCLA, 8-4. Although Ray and Van Nguyen aren't ranked as a doubles team, they both appear in the singles ranking.
Also taking home wins for the Waves in doubles competition were the teams of Lorraine Guillermo (Walnut, Calif./Rowland HS) and Apichaya Runglerdkriangkrai (Bangkok, Thailand/IMG Academy), who defeated Kristine Kouyoumijia and Alexis Valenzuela of Cal State Fullerton, 8-2, and the team of Matea Cutura (Zagreb, Croatia/Gimnazija Birotehnika/DePaul) and Ale Granillo (Pachuca, Mexico/Instituto Hidalgo), who were victorious over LMU's Miya Jin and Laura Mueller, 8-5.
In singles competition, fourth-seeded Guillermo dispatched Cal State Fullerton's Kouyoumijia in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, to improve to 11-2 on the young season. Meanwhile, Granillo was also triumphant, but her win did not come as easy. She dropped the first set, 3-6 to Long Beach State redshirt freshman Julie Gerard. However, Granillo would storm back and win the next two sets, 6-3, 6-2 for her fourth victory in a row.
Play at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship resumes tomorrow with more main draw singles and doubles action, as well as continued consolation matches.
