The Waves fell to 7-13 overall and 1-8 in league, while the Toreros improved to 8-12, 3-5.
Pepperdine fell behind 37-21 at halftime, but quickly made it a seven-point game at 42-35 with 14 1/2 minutes to play. Though the Waves wouldn't get any closer, the Toreros were unable to put the game away until the end.
Senior forward Taylor Darby (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills HS) led the Waves with 15 points, while junior guard Joshua Lowery (Phoenix, Ariz./Desert Vista HS) had 12 points and freshman guard Jordan Baker (Tempe, Ariz./Tempe HS) scored 11.
The Waves shot 34.6% in the first half and 38.5% for the game. Pepperdine's defense had a greatly improved second half, as the Toreros went from 56.0% in the first to 36.4% in the second (46.8% for the game).
While Pepperdine had a 37-32 rebounding advantage, the Toreros had a big 21-7 edge in points off turnovers.
Darby scored 13 of his 15 points after halftime, including seven points early in the second half. A three-point play by Lowery and a basket by senior center Corbin Moore (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) ended what was a 14-5 Pepperdine run to start the second half.
That pulled the Waves within seven, but the score fluctuated between single-digits and double-digits the rest of the game. Six more times in the half, Pepperdine cut USD's lead to eight or nine points, but the Waves couldn't close the gap any further.
The Toreros were led by Dennis Kramer's 14 points, while the freshman backcourt of Christopher Anderson (13 points) and Johnny Dee (12) also played a key role.
Next up, Pepperdine hosts Santa Clara on Saturday (Jan. 28) at 7 p.m. Fans can watch live video streaming of the contest via WaveCasts at www.pepperdinesports.com.
